There are 3 STEPS to constructing on Lake Williamstown or its contributories:

STEP #1

  •  ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Lake Williamstown is under the jurisdiction of the Louisville District of the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Army Corps of Engineers (ACoE) has regulatory jurisdiction over all Waters of the U.S. Therefore the ACoE is concerned with any construction along Lake Williamstown's shoreline. 

 

Prior to any construction near Lake Williamstown, such as Bank Stabilization and/or a Residential Development a property owner must notify the Army Corps of Engineers by submitting a Permit application.

STEP #2

  • KY DIVISION OF WATER

The KY Division of Water is a State division of the Environmental Protection Agency. They work with the Army Corps of Engineers. 

 

The KDoW can Deny, Certify or Condition any ACoE General or Individual Permit. 

 

As a general guideline and depending on the project,

a property owner may be required to submit the following Permit Applications:

  • Stream Construction Certification
    • required for most shoreline construction

                    projects

  • Storm Water Construction
    • required if approximately an acre or more of land is disturbed near the lake or a stream
  • Water Quality Ceritifcation
    • required if there is approximately 300' of shoreline and/or stream construction

STEP #3

  • CITY OF WILLIAMSTOWN

Lake Williamstown is part of the City of Williamstown and its infastructure.  Lake Williamstown serves as the area's water 

reservoir. The City of Williamstown asks that you respect all its laws governing the lake as well as State and Federal laws.  These regulations have been enacted for the public good.

 

 

The City of Williamstown regulates, established standards and enforces penalties for certain activities and practices, mainly:

  • operation of watercraft
  • construction of docks and walkways
  • shoreline protection

 

Exisitng Docks & Structures:

  • Dock permit is required
  • have been built before May 13, 2004 or
  • previously approved docks or structures 

 

New Docks, addition or 50% repair

  • Must apply for permit
    • submit completed dock permit application
  • Shoreline protection must be present or
  • included in proposed dock plan
  • ACoE must be notified of intent (Step #1)
  • KDoW must be notified of intent (Step #2)
